What would you say is the most influential event in the history of mankind? Is is religion-influenced? Sports? Politics? Please give me your thoughts.
Anthony, my initial response was based on my upbringing and cultural background --- it was that the life and death of Christ had the greatest impact in the history of mankind. Then I stepped back and saw that this is a limited point of view, as much of the world would consider the impact of other great spiritual leaders. I think I am now more interested in considering what non-religious event the majority of us could agree upon as having a significant impact upon the world. Then I'm really stymied. Was it the advancement of some military or political power? The fall of a great empire? Some geological change or catastrophe? Did it take place all at once or over an expanse of years? Or was it something more relational --- a shift in attitudes toward life's purpose, toward ourselves, toward other creatures on this planet. Oh, boy --- I don't know. I'm going to have to think about this some more. I anticipate being embarrassed by someone who has a better answer.
Barry Switzer retiring from college football. However, if we're talking about sheer numbers, the communist revolutions in Russia and China probably outweighs anything that happened in the West.
It is hard trying to answer that question. To Christians the birth of Jesus would be the greatest event, but what about other religious groups? Would that matter to them. I could almost say that USC hiring Steve Spurrier is a lifechanging event. Could the assasination of Kenndy be one such event? What would America be like now?
